Developments in Maximum Likelihood Unit Root Tests
نویسندگان
چکیده
The exact maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) provides a test statistic for the unit root test that is more powerful (Fuller, 1996, p. 577) than the usual least squares approach. In this paper a new derivation is given for the asymptotic distribution of this test statistic that is simpler and more direct than the previous method. The response surface regression method is used to obtain a fast algorithm that computes accurate finite-sample critical values. This algorithm is available in the R package mleur that is available on CRAN. The empirical power of the new test is shown to be much better than the usual test not only in the normal case but also for innovations generated from an infinite variance stable distribution as well as for innovations generated from a GARCH(1, 1) process.

متن کاملMaximum Likelihood Estimation of a Unit Root Bilinear Model with an Application to Prices
We estimate a unit root bilinear process using the Maximum Likelihood method with log-likelihood function constructed by means of the Kalman filter, and evaluate the finite sample properties of this estimator. One hundred and six world-wide price series are tested for unit root bilinearity applying the test suggested by Charemza et al. (2002b). Applying the Maximum Likelihood estimator based on...
متن کاملEstimation and Inference in Short Panel Vector Autoregressions with Unit Roots and Cointegration
This paper considers estimation and inference in panel vector autoregressions (PVARs) with fixed effects when the time dimension of the panel is finite, and the cross-sectional dimension is large. A Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator based on a transformed likelihood function is proposed and shown to be consistent and asymptotically normally distributed irrespective of the unit root and cointegr...
متن کاملA critique of the application of unit root tests
This paper exploits the fact that any time series with a unit root can de decomposed into a stationary series and a random walk. Since the random walk component can have arbitrarily small variance, tests for unit roots or trend stationarity have arbitrarily low power in finite samples. Furthermore, there are unit root processes whose likelihood functions and autocorrelation functions are arbitr...
متن کاملThe Asymptotic Distribution of Unit Root Tests of Unstable Autoregressive Processes
UNIT ROOT TESTING has been developed through numerous papers since the work of Ž . Dickey and Fuller 1979 . The idea is to test the hypothesis that the differences of an observed time series do not depend on its levels, or in other words, the levels of the time series have a unit root that can be removed by differencing. While it is in general possible to have multiple unit roots, only the hypo...
